Reclaim that Old Kitchen Table

I'm a country girl turned semi-suburbia girl so people who know me get a little confused when I tell them I'm from the country. I grew up in a little town that had one stop light at a main intersection and just a quaint little grocery store. When we first moved into our house, there wasn't a street name, just a Route #. A few years after we moved in to our house our Route was named Black Snake Rd (yes you read that right).

In the center of our dining room sat a large, round oak table. I remember eating many breakfasts and dinners there, as well as painting my nails and spilling some nail polish (pretty sure I got a switch for that).

This past year my husband and I purchased a home and were in need of a 2nd dining table. My parents reminded me that they still had that old round oak table. They offered it to me on one condition: it has to stay in the family (I'm a purger, so family heirlooms have been known to make their way to Goodwill and other consignments fairly regularly - oops). I sat there remembering that oak table and while I remember the beauty of it, I just couldn't get over that basic country style that just didn't go with our more modern decor.

My parents ran a furniture business for years and as part of their business they fixed broken furniture (armoires, kitchen tables, chairs, and the like). My dad offered his expertise and suggested I take the table and distress it to make it look weathered (after all that is all the rage right now) and paint it to match the color scheme in our pool room. It was a big task, but I was ready to take it on. Many folks have asked for tips and tricks on this updated table, so I will walk you through my steps.

Here is the before picture:

Materials:
9 inch foam roller
paint brush
220 grit sand paper
80 grit sand paper
rasp
Lacquer Thinner
Old white rags
0000 Steel Wool
Latex Satin White paint (or Furniture paint from Lowes)
MinWax Woodstain Classic Grey

Step 1: Prepping the table
I took some old rags and some lacquer thinner and rubbed the entire table down to remove the original clear lacquer. Do not pour the lacquer directly on the table. If there are still some remnants of shine, or it's slick, take some 80 grit sand paper and sand over those spots going WITH the grain.
Next take some 0000 grade steel wool and go over the table lightly to make sure it is smooth.
Tip: the table should be tacky feeling when you're done
Disposal: Lacquer thinner is combustable, so be extremely mindful of disposing your rags. I layed each of mine out on our driveway (I was lucky that it rained the next day) and once they dried from the rain, I washed them.

Step 2: Painting the table
I used Sherwin Williams Latex Satin White for the base and Minwax Wood Stain Classic Grey for the top. We already had these sitting in our garage so there was no cost. Our minwax stain was the smallest can (32 oz) which you can get for $7-8 at Lowes.
I painted the base 1st with a foam roller and used a sponge brush for the grooves in the claws.
Tip: I would suggest painting the base last as some of my stain speckled the feet when I painted the top.

I stained the top with a regular paint brush, going WITH the grain, because I wanted it to have some streaks (natural lighter application spots where the original wood color would peek through). I did not wipe any of the stain off because I wanted a darker look but if you want a lighter stain, you can wipe as you brush it on. The longer you leave the stain on, the darker it will become.
Tip: Only paint and stain when the weather is dry. I stained the top while it was raining and had to strip it and then re-stain. Do not paint when it is raining, or following a rainstorm when it is very humid out.

Step 3: Distressing the table
Once the paint and stain have dried (at least 48 hours) you can start distressing the paint.
I used a rasp and some 220 grit sand paper (you can use a rougher sand paper but this was my first time and I didn't want to strip too much).
I suggest sanding and rasping edges first then the claw feet. This will give you an idea of the distressed look and then you can strategically sand and rasp in larger areas. The good news is if you mess up, you can just paint back over a spot and start over.

Step 4: Admire your table
We moved our table into our pool room and I am absolutely in love with how it turned out. My dad is painting our chairs to go with it and I can't wait to update you all with the table and chairs!

Good luck! I can't wait to see your finished products!

Big Faith Gets Bigger Results

Ever since we met, my husband has worked in the food and beverage industry. When we started dating he was the Marketing Manager for a local restaurant and bar and was continually promoted over the years. The food and beverage industry is one that requires a lot of odd hours and I knew this before we were ever married or had kids (I too worked in the restaurant industry for several years). I understood the demands of running a restaurant and that he would be away many nights and would always work weekends. I was okay with this...until we had kids.

In January, my husband was the General Manager of a local restaurant where he worked days, evenings, and weekends. As a full-time working mom of 2 under 2, I was struggling to keep it together. Exhaustion doesn't even explain it, and "single mom" was uttered from my lips more times than I would like to admit (I am in no way saying I am a single mom, and I truly have no idea how you singles do it, kudos to you!). My husband was complacent in his job, so he wasn't looking for other opportunities even when I would beg him to try and find something else (usually after he closed 2 nights in a row during the week, and I had crying babies all around me). Then it happened, it hit the fan.

It was the end of January and my husband got the flu. He got a doctor's note for work and then was out for several days (in restaurant industry, there are no sick days, someone has to cover your management shift if you are out). By Wednesday he was starting to feel better and closed down the restaurant that night and the next night, he was also scheduled to work that Friday night as well, but had the weekend off at least. And thank goodness, I was "single mommy" to 3 kids that week! But then, the inevitable text from his boss came Friday afternoon: You're going to need to work Saturday and Sunday to make up for your missed shifts this week.

My husband texted me at work informing me of the text he'd gotten and how upset he was. He was so frustrated that time and time again he was working nights and weekends away from his family and was missing out on spending quality time with our boys. I remember reading his text and hearing the frustration. I immediately texted back: why don't you just quit.

Wait, what? Did I just type that? Am I telling my husband, the bread-winner, to quit his job? I'm a teacher....in North Carolina....I am POOR! What am I doing? (God??)

I started looking at our bank account, and realized between our checking and savings we could survive without his paycheck for a while.

Wait, what? Why am I looking at this? (God??)

I printed out our bill calendar, started calculating and realized it really was possible.

I left work as soon as the bell rang, and my husband met me at the door.

"Seriously, just quit. Here are our statements and bill calendar, we can make it work."

Wait, what? Are these words really coming out of my mouth? (God??)

Excitement hit! My husband felt joy! Then he became uncertain..."You support me doing this? Just up and quitting my job?" I really did, I truly believed the timing of his illness and the requirement to work yet another weekend, was a sign from God. God had been whispering for me to support my husband and help him transition from a stagnant job this whole time.

My response, "Go into work today and give your notice." I read his face and knew that this was what he wanted to do, but there was still uncertainty. He hadn't applied for any jobs, he had nothing out there waiting in the wings. He asked me to pray with him. We joined hands and began praying to our Heavenly Father, asking for guidance and for Him to speak to my husband and tell him if this was the right move. If this is what He was asking of us. After our prayer, my husband left for work still unsure of what his next step was. I remember telling him as he walked out the door, "You will have an answer when you pull into your parking spot."

Fifteen minutes later, I got a call. My husband called to tell me he knew what to do and was walking in to give his notice! Let the application process begin.

We were blessed that we could still afford childcare which gave my husband the opportunity to apply for jobs full-time and schedule interviews. He was unemployed for just over a month. his last day was February 12th and he was offered a job on March 18th. Fun fact: This job was the 1st one he had applied for! Another fun fact: During the interview, the owner mentioned how he serves in his church and the phrase "family-oriented" was used multiple times.

Since starting his new job, my husband has been praised and appreciated more than in his previous career. And to top it all off, this job has provided a financial raise that we couldn't have foreseen.

Pause: I'm not here to brag about money, I'm here to brag about God. He is the one who provided the guidance, He is the one who provided the finances while we lived on 1 salary, He is the one who is increasing my husband's potential.

We prayed: And He gave us the best answer we could have ever imagined.

My husband is home every night and weekend now. My husband is serving in our church because he is free on Sundays. My husband is watching our boys grow and is molding them into godly young men.

If you feel like you're in need of a change, I urge you to pray and ask God for guidance. He will fulfill all of your needs beyond what you can imagine.

Infertility Journey: You Are Not Alone

A flood of emotions have run through me as this week, National Infertility Awareness Week, comes to a close. It wasn't that long ago that my husband and I were on the Infertility Journey ourselves. The journey itself is draining, emotionally, physically, and financially. Imagine yearning for something your entire life, knowing in your heart that you will become pregnant one day, only to be told that your body isn't capable of creating life. Sitting through multiple doctor's appointments each week, requesting off work, being poked and prodded regularly, and spending every dime you have to hear the words "you can't conceive naturally". The journey itself is very lonely. But I am declaring to those migrating through infertility, "You are not alone".

God tells us in Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Infertility is an isolating disease, impacting 1 in 8 couples. You sit in the waiting room with several other couples, making eye contact, wondering what their diagnosis is, and yet while you're all experiencing the same struggle you feel completely alone. However, we are not alone in Christ, there is no need to fear infertility. Each time you walk in that waiting room, Jesus is walking next to you. He's holding your hand while you get blood taken and have ultrasound after ultrasound. He's embracing you when you discover you aren't pregnant again or miscarry, and through Him you find the strength to continue going to the doctors and seek treatment. He is whispering to you, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you" (Isaiah 43:2).

Your hope to carry a child comes from God. I remember finding indescribable comfort in Psalm 62:5, "Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him".

About half way through our journey, I remember doubting my dream to be pregnant and thinking "maybe this isn't God's calling on my life, maybe I'm not supposed to carry a child, maybe I'm not even supposed to be a mom." Then one day, I prayed asking "God I have this yearning, this desire in my heart to have a child. I want to carry a baby, but Lord I don't know if this is my own selfish desire or if it is Your calling on my life. Heavenly Father, I am bringing my desire to you, and I am asking you to remove this desire if it is not Your will. If I am not to conceive or carry a baby, I ask that you remove this desire from my heart and give me peace." Can I tell you, after I prayed that prayer the desire in my heart only became stronger! God was reaffirming, "Yes! My calling on your life is that you will carry a child. Trust in Me."

God reminded me then to "Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:3-4).

Trusting in God is what brought us through so many painful appointments and consultations. Our story is so different, as is everyone's infertility journey. For us, we decided to walk away from treatment, stop "trying" and just lean on God. In just four months we were pregnant, but miscarried; the next month we were pregnant, but miscarried. At that point the doctor wanted to have a consultation and I remember him saying "Well, you couldn't get pregnant for years and now you've gotten pregnant twice. We need to figure this out." I looked at him and boldly told him, "We don't need to figure it out, God is working." You see, I don't believe that God gave me two babies and took them away, no God does not intentionally hurt us that way, but I do believe he had been healing me (I had Stage 4 Endometriosis).

After each of those miscarriages I thanked God and I began repeating Psalm 52:9, "I will praise you forever for what you have done; in your name I will hope, for your name is good. I will praise you in the presence of your saint."

That is not to say that we didn't mourn those miscarriages, but instead of focusing on the loss we decided to focus on the gain (getting pregnant). Only through the strength and peace of God were we able to be thankful. We are reassured in John 16:33, "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

In January 2013, we discovered that our miscarriages had lead to a blocked fallopian tube; one more obstacle to overcome. "And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast" (1 Peter 5:10).

We didn't seek treatment to unblock my fallopian tube, we sought God. We prayed, we believed, we quoted scripture, and we took action through tithing. Spring of 2013 we found ourselves experiencing an incredible amount of peace; a God-given peace. I wrote several verses on my bathroom mirror and around my office at work. Matthew 21:22, "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive" was a go-to verse for me. We had been praying for four years to be blessed with a child, but had we been believing? I mean truly, 100%, without a doubt, believing that we would become pregnant? I don't think we were. I think there was a little self-doubt for me, each month, when I knew in a few short days I either would or wouldn't be pregnant. I had doubt, I didn't fully believe. But when we made the decision to fully trust God, putting all of our faith in Him, that doubt was removed. In April 2014 we welcomed a healthy, full-term baby boy and in November we will be welcoming another precious child. Only through Christ Jesus is this even possible.

So I'm asking you: remove the doubt, forget what the doctors have said, rebel against the earthly answers and shout out to God. He is sitting patiently, waiting for you to call on His name and believe that He will fulfill the desires of your heart.

I am praying for each and every one of you who is on the infertility journey. You are not alone.

Here are some more verses we leaned on during our journey:
Psalm 33:20 "We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield."

Psalm 39:7 "But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you."

2 Corinthians 12:9 "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

Galatians 6:9 "And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.

In Christ,

Sarah

3 Things People Should Stop Saying to Small-Framed Women After Childbirth

For the most part, I have pretty thick skin and don't get offended very easily. But over the last 10 months, I had so many people comment on my body that it made me think about what is being said to small-framed women. Apparently when you're thin, petite, and short, many folks assume that you are open to discussing your weight. I understand that most people are trying to offer a compliment but maybe it's time we start choosing our words more carefully. If these statements bother me, I wonder how much it bothers someone who isn't thick-skinned.

1. "You're SO tiny!"
First of all, when did "SO tiny" become a compliment? Maybe you're just confused because I was SO big when I was 9 months pregnant, but this is not complimentary. Yes, I am 5'0" so that already makes me small, but "tiny"? The very definition of tiny is "very small or diminutive (extremely or unusually small)". Tiny is not a positive remark. While your intentions are good, try finding another word or phrase...a generic "wow, you look great" would suffice.

2. "Have you already lost all of your baby weight?"
This is probably the phrase I've heard the most. Maybe it's because of my #losebabyweight on my Facebook posts, but before I got pregnant and it was #goalweight no one was asking me how much weight I had lost....
A friend of mine (who is of a larger frame) and also recently had a baby, witnessed someone asking me this one day...and she was shocked! Once the person left, my friend and I began discussing the situation and I realized, she had never been asked this question...but why not? Because it would be rude to ask a heavier-set woman if she had lost her baby weight? Why is it rude to ask her, but not rude to ask me?
Which leads me to the next comment....

3. "It must've been easy for you to lose your baby weight!"
Oh I see, because I got back down to my pre-baby size quickly you assume it was easy. This statement is typically followed by "well, you ate really healthy during your pregnancy, so I'm sure you didn't have much to lose." First of all, yes I did eat healthy during my pregnancy which does help when it comes to losing baby weight; however, I still gained 45 pounds and left the hospital only 5 pounds lighter. I had 40 pounds to lose so in response to the statement, "No, it wasn't easy to lose my baby weight but I was dedicated." I counted calories, I worked out, I cut out the soft drinks, sweet snacks, and fast food. It was hard work. Just because it came off quickly, doesn't mean it came off easily!

I'm not shy and typically don't even shy away from these statements, but I do think about the women who internalize these comments (or the women who overhear the comments and haven't "lost all your baby weight" and aren't "so tiny"). There is so much pressure on women to "lose the baby weight" quickly after childbirth because our culture is fixated on being thin. I just ask, that you think about what you're saying and how you're saying it before approaching a new mom. Everyone's body is different and our bodies go through so much during and after pregnancy. Some moms are working really hard to lose that baby weight but it just isn't coming off. Have a little grace :)

Biggest Loser 2015

Our school's Biggest Loser competition has commenced! While I'm excited to get motivated to lose the rest of this baby weight, I know that it will be a true challenge. You see in the past, I wasn't a mom (obviously) so I had lots of free-time (LOTS of FREE time). I'm talking for-real free time to work out and stay fit; I combined my exercise regime with working out at Planet Fitness and taking classes at Sassy Girl Fitness. Each day I dedicated 3 HOURS to working out - this was FULL, HARDCORE lifting, cardio, and core training. I know that I will not be able to dedicate this amount of time now to exercising that I'm a mom. However, I refuse to let being a mom become an excuse to not work out and live a healthy lifestyle.

The Fantastic Five are five tips that I give to my Biggest Loser Participants each week when we head off our competitions. I thought I would share them in case you too are in need of some beginning of the year motivation :)

1. Set Small Attainable Goals
Starting off a weight loss competition with the idea that you're going to cut out sugar, soda, caffeine, and processed foods is a map to Quitsville. If you haven't cut these foods out before, trying to cut them all out at once will drive you insane. Start with a small goal, like cutting out soda for a week, once you attain that goal then you can ADD to it.

2. Motivate Yourself
Sometimes we just need a visual of what our end goal is. Going on a trip? Take a picture of your destination and put it on your bathroom mirror and refrigerator door! Can't squeeze into that favorite pair of jeans anymore? Hang them on your bathroom door! Seeing your goal every day will help keep you motivated.

3. Adopt the motto "after 8 is too late" for snacks after dinner.
Snacking late has lots of negative effects. First of all, when snacking late we tend to choose less healthy food option (chips, popcorn, candy, etc). Secondly, at night our body is in rest mode, so our metabolism is resting and we are not as active as we were earlier in the day. This causes our snack to settle and we are not burning the calories that we are taking in.
Check out this article on tips for breaking the late night snacking habit!

4. Meal Planning - Weekly
Oh how I LOVE meal planning - Sunday night my husband and I talk about what dinners we will be making over the next week. We are foodies so this is fun for us. Not everything on the menu has to be perfectly healthy, but having our meals planned keeps us from making rash, unhealthy decisions when we get home from work. It also helps us avoid the annoying "what do you want for dinner" conversation.

5. Stay on Track
Get a fitness/calorie counter app (like MyFitnessPal)and use it every single day. If you're keeping up with every morsel you eat, you will be more aware of the foods you're eating and you begin to eat/snack less. I mean really, who wants to spend 3 minutes logging in one hershey's kiss? I'd rather just pass!
Other fitness/calorie trackers that are pretty popular:
FitBit

Calorie Count App
Health App (available on Apple iPhone 5s and 6)

Blueberry Power Muffins

I love blueberry muffins, but they aren't something I typically go out and buy. When I saw a recipe recently for the power muffins I knew I could tweak it a little and have a deliciously healthy snack. These things are so yummy! I'll definitely be making these more often!

You’ll need:

Makes 12 regular muffins (depending how full you pack your muffin tin)

no-stick cooking spray
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup oats–quick or regular oats, plain
2/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 ounces honey nonfat greek yogurt
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup fresh blueberries

Heat oven to 350°.
Coat muffin tin with cooking spray or use cupcake liners.
Combine flour, sugar, oats, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl.
Combine yogurt, eggs, butter, and vanilla in a second bowl.
Fold yogurt mixture into dry mixture; stir to combine completely.
Gently fold in blueberries.
Spoon into muffin tins.

Bake until top is golden and springs back when you gently touch it, 20-25 minutes.

Pickles, Ice Cream, and Flatulence Part 2

Here is the long awaited for Part 2 of Pickles, Ice Cream, and Flatulence. I hope you're ready because it only gets better from here! In the race to have babies, Barrett and I apparently ran a marathon instead of a sprint. After 4 years of trying to get pregnant it is safe to say that we have a LOT of friends who have had babies. These friends have been wonderful when it comes to preparing me for pregnancy, but sometimes I think they forget about some of the symptoms they had. Now, every pregnancy is different so not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and heck maybe the joy of having your little one in your arms causes you to forget about these weird changes in your body, but here are a few more things that I think got left out of the advice.

Spreading: I don't know if there is a medical term for this....so I will just call it what it is "spreading". Here's an idea of what spreading feels like: Think back to when you were about 10 or 12 and riding your bike. Mine was pink and white, I loved that bike! Now, think about getting your speed up, you're standing up on your pedals trying to build your speed, but then your foot slips off the pedal and you go crashing onto the metal bar, straddling it!! Remember that? That's what spreading feels like, bruising your lady parts. I like to believe this is when waddling begins! It's not a constant pain or uncomfortable feeling, but every now and then you'll feel like you've been kicked in the crotch and waddling is the only way to walk comfortably.

Unwarranted Advice: Oh this one is tricky. I was warned that people would be giving me lots of advice and I am welcome to listening to it. I will even take your advice into consideration and weigh my options. However, there are some women who give advice in such a negative, Debbie Downer kind of way that it becomes annoying. For instance, I am aware that my time will be depleted - I am having a baby: he will not sleep through the night, he will be fussy, he will poop his diaper right after I've changed it, etc etc. But it's the way these women give their advice with condescending tones in their voices "Oh honey (little snicker) you won't have time to wash your hair or even do your make up, much less use the bathroom." And the advice and negative tones just go on and on. I can only imagine how it gets after the baby comes....oh my! Earplugs please :)

Immobility: Here's another symptom that folks semi-warned me about. I was told it would be difficult to put on my shoes and socks. I was told that I wouldn't see my feet for while - seriously I know they're there, but I'm not sure what they look like anymore. I do not feel that I was fully prepared for the inability to move though. Recently I dropped some of my dinner on the floor, and typically the 5 second rule would take place (5 seconds? yeah right, it's gonna take me about 7 minutes to squat down and pick that up) so I called out for our dog, Buckler, to come clean the floor instead. Good thing he likes steamed vegetables.
Side note: As soon as you find out you're pregnant, get a dog! He will help keep the floor clean when you can't reach it anymore :)

Maternity Clothes Don't Fit Anymore: You know that maternity wardrobe that you excitedly bought when you were 3 or 4 months pregnant? Yeah, they don't fit any more. Those cute little tunics, now look like belly shirts and those maternity pants are starting to cut off your circulation or press on your bladder even more than your baby. If you're in your 3rd trimester, switch to leggings and wear them for the last 3 months!

Leaky Breasts: Your milk's in! Congratulations! Now, this doesn't compare to what will come after the baby is here, but the first time you experience this you might freak out a little bit. I had NO idea what was going on - "why is my boob wet?". Since it's clear (it's actually colostrum) I frantically ran to research it and text one of my girlfriends to make sure I wasn't a freak of nature. Side Note: Please inform your spouse of this new side effect before you get intimate again. He doesn't want that surprise - trust me!

Leaky Lady Parts: Are you in your 3rd trimester? Have you peed your pants yet? If not, consider yourself lucky. This is one side effect that is certainly different for every woman. Some may never pee their paints, but for many moms-to-be at some point there will probably be a little leakage. Most likely this will occur when you are: laughing, sneezing, coughing....talking, walking, sleeping, who knows. Just be prepared. Take an extra pair of panties with you EVERY where you go, or wear a panty liner.

If you're reading this and your pregnant: Congratulations! I hope this isn't scary or intimidating...I just want you to be prepared. And remember, like my husband has said many times: "I'm sorry, but I relish in your uncomfortableness because I know that means there's a growing baby in there!"

And don't worry friends: I will be posting plenty when the baby arrives...I won't be sleeping so I might as well write my blog, right?

Until next time.....

Pickles, Ice Cream, and Flatulence: Part 1

As I head off my 3rd trimester, I realize that there are some symptoms that people did not prepare me for. I know folks don't want to scare you by dishing the gross details that come with child bearing, but I would've liked to know that there's the possibility I will pee on myself. So I've decided it's about time women know what to REALLY expect. This is my first pregnancy but I think there's something here that every expectant mom can relate too. And don't worry, Part 2 is coming soon!!

Here are the things that folks don't or won't tell you about: Please note, these are my own experiences and every pregnancy is different.

Flatulence: I was actually told about this one. Many people, and books, informed me that I would produce a LOT of gas as my pregnancy progressed. However, no one told me that it would be bad enough that I would offend myself! I now keep a can of Febreze air freshener close by in my desk drawer at work. I have also become a master at "crop dusting". Yes, I am now THAT person! While I can take GasX, it has not even come close to amending the situation!

Anticipation: There's something about hitting the 3rd trimester that increases your anticipation. I still have 10 weeks until my due date but my anticipation is at an all time high. You (and your spouse) will likely create a "Honey Do" list, if you haven't already. I find myself walking in our little one's room and just staring in his closet, or around the room and mentally creating a to-do list of items we need to add to the registry or go buy, RIGHT NOW because we want to be prepared, right?

Reflux: Some women have expressed having some crazy heartburn, and being someone who loves spicy food and has heartburn already I assumed this would be the worst for me. But, I have not experienced heartburn, I've just had acid reflux or as WebMd likes to call it "Regurgitation". Let me give you an example. I was on the phone the other week with my girlfriend, Kendra. We had been chatting for a while, then all of a sudden, mid-sentence I say "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I just threw up in my mouth." Luckily, my trash can was close by so I just spit into it, but seriously there was no belch to precede this regurgitation. I was just talking, and there came the chunks.

Love: When we announced we were pregnant I immediately started hearing from women, "Girl you have no idea what love is." They are so right. Granted I haven't met this little boy yet, but the day we found out we were pregnant I knew that I would lay down my life for him. There is NOTHING I won't do for this sweet miracle baby. We recently had a 3D/4D ultrasound at SweetPea 3D and watching him smile, yawn, move his fingers and suck his thumb only caused my heart to swell with joy. As I showed his pictures to friends and family I heard myself saying "I am so in love with him". I love that he looks so much like my husband too. I get a little Barrett out of the deal and I wouldn't trade that for the world! :)

Part 2 of "Pickles, Ice Cream, and Flatulence" is coming soon. Be on the look out! :)

Goodbye 2013; Hello 2014!!

2013 is coming to an end and I am sitting here thinking, "How in the world did 2013 go by so fast?" I really think this is the quickest time has ever flown for me...As I'm sitting here reading everyone's posts and watching their video montages I find myself reflecting on my year as well. As a recap, here is my year in review:

January:
Our niece, Samantha Grace, entered our world on the 6th and everyone's lives changed forever! Babies and children are such a wonderful blessing!

February:
I joined my first Life Group at Freedom House Church, God Chicks, and it not only strengthened my relationship with Christ but it gave me beautiful new friendships with some amazing women!

March:
Not only did I reach my goal weight this month, but I surpassed it! I got on the scale this month and weighed LESS than I did in high school, but still had lots of muscle tone! I am extremely proud of that accomplishment.

April:
Barrett and I took our annual Spring Break trip to a land far, far away. This year we visited the Riviera Maya. Unfortunately, we both spent a day and a half in the room recovering from either food poisoning or Montezuma's Revenge. We're still not sure on that one!

May:
Picked beautiful carnations out of my front flower bed and gave them to my mom and grandmother's as part of their Mother's Day presents! This month I also attended the May races, as usual, and got to cheer for my favorite driver Kasey Kahne!

June:
I wrapped up another school year and then bolted out the doors and headed to the beach! My home away from home!

July:
Spent a week in an ocean front home on Oak Island. This is my only negative post: The locals are HORRIBLY RUDE, and we will never visit that beach again. Seriously, if you want to relax go to the Outer Banks, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, or Holden Beach.

August:
Barrett and I found out that we were expecting! After years of infertility treatment it was the best surprise that we were pregnant without any fertility help! God is SO good!

September:
I joined Jamberry Nails. Wow! I not only love the nail wraps, but the pay isn't too shabby either. I LOVE this part-time "job". By far this is the easiest direct sales job I've ever had. Everyone loves these nails wraps!
www.sarahdabbs.jamberrynails.net

October:
Celebrated 6 years of marriage to my best friend, Barrett Dabbs! I fall more in love with him every day! This month we also watched 2 dear friends get married in Shelby, NC. Congrats Casey and Nancy Keith!

November:
Found out that our little bundle of joy is a boy. We had a huge party and are thankful for all of the friends and family who came to support us! What a wonderful surprise! Can't wait to meet John Davis Dabbs in April!

December:
Was asked to lead a Life Group at our church along with Kendra Glover! WOW! I was completely caught off guard and enthusiastically accepted the challenge. I can't wait to share the Word and fellowship with some wonderful women next semester!

So there you have it: My 2013 in Review! I cannot wait for 2014 for so many reasons, but most of all I am ready to welcome our sweet little boy in April. I'm sure I'll be posting lots more in the next few months as we prepare for his arrival!

Happy New Year!!

Weekly Verse: 12/29

As 2013 comes to a close and this is the last Sunday of the year, I post my last verse(s).

But before I do, let me take you through this 52 week journey. I started this journey with the idea of simply memorizing a verse and sharing it weekly. I quickly realized that an anecdote, along with the verse helped me with memorization.

After a few weeks, I realized that I didn't just want to memorize verses but use each "weekly scripture" as a message. I would spend so much time reading His word and searching for the perfect verse or verses to go along with what I was going through that past or upcoming week. As a result my relationship with Christ has become stronger than ever!

If you need a New Year's resolution may I suggest this: Dig deeper into the Word! Read a few verses each week, memorize a verse each month, read the entire Bible! But dig into your faith, you'll be amazed at how much it changes your life!

My verses for this week are part of my prayers for each of you as you enter into the new year. God bless you and Happy New Year.

Paul's Prayers for Spiritual Wisdom:

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength (Ephesians 1:15-19 NIV)

Weekly Verse: 12/19

So, I just realized today is Thursday and I never posted my weekly verse. Pregnancy Brain must be getting to me. However, this slip couldn't have come at a better time. I'm sure you've all heard about the A&E/Phil Robertson controversy and I think that could stand to be addressed.

I want you to think about this for just moment:
Phil Robertson voiced an opinion, a belief, and in a country where we have Freedom of Speech he is being punished for his "politically incorrect" views. Wait! Before you bite my head off, let me state that I do firmly believe that his comments were crude; however, that is my opinion and I am entitled to it. It is also my opinion that he has every right to stand by his faith and speak up for things he doesn't believe in. He quotes the word of God, and while his beliefs may not be popular or accepted by society he is entitled to them.

I spent years in the high school English classroom teaching my students about debating topics. We debated some very touchy subjects (war, religion, politics, etc). However in my classroom students were taught that they were to respect everyone's opinion. That doesn't mean they had to agree with it, but they had to respect it and accept it as an opinion or belief. I had 11th grade students, 16 year olds, who understood this better than our media-driven society. People think that just because something offends them (especially if it is related to the Bible and Christianity) that they should condemn others and punish them for exercising a right that was bestowed on our country (which was founded on Christian beliefs).

I applaud Phil Robertson for standing up for his beliefs. I don't agree with his choice of words, but I don't have to. He stood on the word of God and supported his statements with Biblical facts.

This week's verse focuses on just that:
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness. (Ephesians 6:10-17, ESV)

Weekly Verse 12/9

I don't know about you, but I love giving gifts! I mean, I get so excited I want you to open your present BEFORE your birthday, or Christmas Day! I don't enjoy giving gifts for the "thank you" in return; I enjoy giving gifts because it brings joy to someone else.

I don't know when, or how, my parents instilled this joy of giving in me, but I thank them for it!

Tonight, I sat in the living room wrapping gifts and thought about each person I was wrapping for. I then started praying for each person as I finished wrapping the gift. I don't know why I did this, I haven't done it before but I started with one and then it just continued.

Gifts don't have to be big, or even monetary; gifts can be a simple note, some quality time spent with a loved one, or a baked good. Imagine how much happier our world would be if people were in the giving spirit more often!

This week's verse is simple but true:

The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller. (Proverbs 11:24 MSG)

Weekly Verse 12/1

Tis' the season - my favorite season that is. I absolutely love the Christmas season. The music, the traditions, the movies, hot chocolate, celebrating the TRUE meaning of Christmas, and giving gifts. Summer may be my favorite "weather season" but Christmas by far is my favorite season to celebrate!

I'm sure your Facebook feed was overloaded this weekend with folks heading out for Black Friday shopping and talking about the deals they had gotten. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good deal. However, sometimes the focus of Christmas gets turned to materialistic worship. Too much focus is put on the purchasing and deal-getting. I hear so many people say they are broke during this season, or they can't do as much this year as they did last year. Is that the purpose of the Christmas season? To spend, spend, spend? Believe me, I LOVE giving gifts; seeing the look on someone's face when they unwrap a great, heart-felt gift fills me with joy, but let's remember that Christmas isn't about how much money we spend.

We've turned into a greedy society. We want so much and expect to get it on Christmas morning. So let me ask you this: Have you thought about those families that won't have Christmas this year? The ones who don't have a home to decorate? The ones who don't have family to celebrate with? Let's make it a goal to be GENEROUS this year.
Think about this:
1. Can you give some money to the Salvation Army Bell Ringers?
2. Can you buy the person in line behind you their Starbucks drink?
3. Can you give just 3 hours to help at a homeless shelter or Operation Christmas Child?
4. Do you know a family who needs a Christmas tree? You can find some great deals around the area and purchase a live tree for 1 family. I bet it would make their year!

This week's verse is about generosity:
"But a generous man devises generous things, And by generosity he shall stand" (Isaiah 32:8, NKJV)

Weekly Verse: 11/12

This past week, I went searching for a verse for this week. One that would stand out for me, one that I could relate to. I just couldn't find the right one, ya know? Of course there were a few verses that I have bookmarked that I could have used, but I was looking for "the right one". Yesterday morning, I opened my YouVersion Bible App and the verse of the day was absolutely perfect. It relates to everyone at any point in their journey.

There have been many times when I've been hanging out with my church friends and we begin talking about why we came to Freedom House, how we met our husbands, just general girl talk. This is part of our bonding and I love the stories we share.

What I talk about my past sometimes I am ashamed because I strayed away from Christ and the church for many years. Granted, I do not divulge all of the nitty gritty details, but it's still hard to think about the person I was for a little while.

However, even with the few details I do give, these women do not judge me; in fact sometimes I feel like they welcome me in to their circle even more. Because of my past I'm able to have a future. I have been able to turn my actions, attitude, etc around and I've become someone others can relate to.

I love that regardless of where we've been and what we've done in our past, we can shed that with a promise in Jesus Christ. Isn't that so uplifting to hear? It warms my heart knowing all my sin is wiped away and I'm renewed each day.

This week's verse:
Brothers and sisters, I know that I still have a long way to go. But there is one thing I do: I forget what is in the past and try as hard as I can to reach the goal before me. (Philippians 3:13)

Weekly Verse: 10/22

Soooo, I just realized today is Tuesday and I'm a little behind...oops. I think my days got a little mixed up with all the events going on this weekend. You see this weekend Barrett and I attended a wedding for two of our dear friends.

Casey started out as one of Barrett's college buddies, but once we met he soon became a very good friend to me as well. I look at Casey, and Barrett, and their group of friends and I see so much more than that. I see brothers. Brothers who would do anything for each other. Brothers who would fight tooth and nail for each other, their wives, their children, their families. These "friends", these "brothers" have a connection that is unbreakable.
It is rare in life to find comradeship like this and I am fortunate to have my own group of "sisters" as well.

When we are blessed with these relationships, we must thank God for that gift. For only he knows the needs of our hearts and places these people in our lives to fulfill some void. I am so thankful for the friendships and relationships that have continued to grow over the last few years.

I love each and every one of my friends, brothers, sisters.

This week's verse is:
"A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity" (Proverbs 17:17, NKJV)

Our Baby Journey

Finally, the cat is out of the bag! Barrett and I are expecting our first child in April of 2014. We are beyond excited, in fact I don't think there is a word to describe how ecstatic we are. After trying to conceive for almost 4 years, this pregnancy is a complete miracle. I plan to script my pregnancy experience on this blog and I hope that is will serve man purposes: giving infertile women hope, giving pregnant women a laugh while, and encouraging others to seek Christ when they are in a difficult place. Welcome to the ADD Pregnant Woman's blog - it's sure to throw you for a loop ;-)

Let's start with the infertility journey. Like every young couple, Barrett and I were under the impression that our pregnancy would happen quickly and easily. Boy were we wrong. After about 6 months of trying, I went to see my Gynecologist because in my heart I knew something was wrong (side note: ALWAYS trust your instincts). My gyno blew off our efforts and told me that when we had tried for a year and were still not prego then I could come back and she would refer me to a fertility specialist. I can't explain how angry I was. My family does not have a history of infertility, the women in my family think about getting pregnant and wake up the next morning with a baby bump. I knew something was wrong; so I took matters into my own hands.

I called the fertility clinic, Reproductive Endocrinology of Charlotte (aka REACH), and pretended to be my gynecologist's office and referred myself. When REACH asked for my paper work to be faxed, I then called the gynecologist's office and told them that my information needed to be faxed over, STAT! So our infertility journey began.

We started with simple testing, and everything came back fine. The specialist's repsonse, "You should be pregnant and you're not, so we're going to make that happen." Oh, I could finally see the sun shining again - this doctor wanted to help us conceive a child. YAY!

So we began bloodwork and based on my hCG levels each month we would have more bloodwork and scheduled intercourse. After a few months, the specialist decided to do a little digging to find out why my ovulation was off, I was ovulating around day 8 instead of days 12-14. With more tests they found that I had Stage 4 Endometriosis. Because of the advanced stage, I was immediately scheduled for a laparoscopic procedure to remove the endometriosis. This was a procedure that they estimated to take about 30 minutes, as they simply remove the endometriosis with a laser and then close the 4 incisions. My procedure took over 2 hours. The endometriosis had spread so much, that it was on my uterus, cervix, stomach, bladder, and bowels. Additionally, the endometriosis had caused my cervix to be angled backwards and they had to move it. Needless to say, my recovery which was projected to be 1 day took an entire week. But we were hopeful after having the endometriosis removed and ready to start fertility treatment.

With the endometriosis removed, it would still continue to grow and affect my ovulation timing as well as the maturation of my eggs. So the specialist decided to treat the situation this way:
Step 1. Follistim Injections: A commonly-prescribed fertility drug for women. Given by injection, FSH works by stimulating the ovaries to produce more follicles and thereby, more eggs. I take this to help produce more eggs so there would be more of a chance of the sperm fertilizing one.
Step 2. Lupron Injections: Ovulation cannot occur naturally while on Lupron because LH, which triggers ovulation, is suppressed. This prevents a premature surge of the LH before the retrieval, which could cause loss of the cycle.
Step 3. hCG Injection: One injection given to trigger ovulation.
This is a very expensive treatment cycle and we were spending around $600/month on the injections and doctor's visits. We used this treatment cycle for several months but then stopped because my endometriosis levels were too high again.

I underwent treatment again and we sat down with our specialist who wanted to know whether we wanted to proceed with the same procedures or advance to IVF. We weighed our options and after sitting with the financer and finding out that our IVF procedure would cost $26,000 we opted to not try it since it's not guaranteed. We did not want to go through the months and months of injections again, so we told our specialist and his nurse that we would be putting our faith in God.

Eight months later, with no focus on ovulation or hCG levels we conceived naturally thanks to God's love and miraculous healing. I have only been to the fertility specialist once since finding out we were pregnant, and that was just to "confirm" the pregnancy. I have not had any levels taken but I truly believe 100% that God has healed my body of endometriosis and that is why we were able to get pregnant on our own without any fertility!

Soooo, now that we are preggers - I will be posting some updates of our Baby Journey! Here's to a healthy baby and an exciting journey for our family!

Weekly Verse: 10/7 - Why Should We Tithe

A few months ago, our pastor spoke about tithing and while I've heard about tithing my entire life, I realized that my idea of giving money to the church was ALL wrong. Yes, I'm going to talk about money - please do not stop reading ;-) You see, for the longest time I gave to the church because it was expected. I didn't give the 10% but I gave what I thought I could afford. I did it because that is what the Bible says for us to do. I was being obedient. Bonus points, right? WRONG! According to the word, God doesn't want us to give our tithe, our 10% because we HAVE to. He wants us to give our tithe with a loving and giving heart. I learned more about this in April when Pastor Troy spoke about tithing and presented our church with a tithe challenge.

This is our tithe story: This spring Pastor Troy initiated the tithe challenge. My husband and I had been tithing each week, but it was a small amount as it's all we thought we could afford. While Pastor Troy talked about the challenge he asked those who currently tithe to increase to 10%. He said that in all of his years he had never seen someone take the challenge and not experience a miracle; we needed a miracle so we took the challenge. While Pastor Troy was talking about the tithe challenge, I wrote a message on my iPad to my husband ("what if a baby is our miracle?"). After almost 4 years of trying to get pregnant, and going through fertility treatments, my husband and I had been unsuccessful.

Through the 90 day challenge, we did not experience financial hardship like we thought we would, which was a relief, but we also didn't have a positive pregnancy test in that time either. However, we refused to stop tithing and continued with to tithe with faith. It felt great to give our money to the church and see how it was being used to help so many others!

Like I said, the challenge ended, but we continued to give in faith! I tithed one Monday after church; I texted my husband, like always, to let him know. Within 10 minutes, something spoke to my heart and told me to go get a pregnancy test, this is not something I was anticipating or even thinking about. I took the test on my lunch break and it was positive!

I had blood work the next day and my levels were 147, the doctor wanted me to come back a few days later and told me my numbers had to double for us to know if this was a viable pregnancy. We began praying for the number 300. When I had my blood test a few days later my number had more than TRIPLED to 500!

When we looked back on the calendar we saw that I conceived on the LAST WEEK of the tithe challenge! We continue to tithe and I have to say we continue to be blessed!

Please note: I am not saying that you should start tithing so you can witness a miracle, that's backwards. But I will say, that when you make a sacrifice for God you will be amazed at the things he can and will do in your life!

This week's verse focuses on tithing: "But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Cor. 9:6-7)

Weekly Verse: 9/29

Recently, our church, Freedom House, had Life Group sign ups. I joined one back in the spring, and it was an indescribable experience so I decided to join another one. This one is called Daughters of the King.

In this life group, we are reading a book The Circle Maker and focusing on prayer.

We were asked to start a prayer journal, where we continuously write down the prayer requests of others. I love the idea of a prayer journal, and had started one back in the spring. I know some people think it's old fashioned, but what's wrong with old fashioned? Many times people have asked for prayer and I've said that I would pray for them. But soon I would forget their needs and begin praying for others. The prayer journal keeps me on track and even better, let's me "see" answered prayers!

This past Monday we had our Life Group meeting and we were divided into groups; these groups have now become our prayer circles. It is a wonderful feeling to know that you have a group of women praying for you. And there is so much power in group prayer.

While this verse doesn't speak solely about prayer, I think it does show that there is so much power and strength when Christians come together and take a stand with one another.

This week's verse is:
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20 NKJV)

Weekly Verse: 9/15

I'm sure this won't come as a surprise to most of you, but I LOVE football season - college football and NFL. I love spending my Saturday and Sunday watching all the games. I love having a big spread of food to munch on, yelling at the tv, and watching some great athletes! I am amazed by the amount of talent these players possess.

Take the Manning family for instance - they have true talent! Some would say that it is genetic and that they boys were destined to be great football players because of how great their dad was. But there's more to their ability than just genetics and a family background.

Look at Adrian Peterson - a player who many would argue is the most talented Running Back in the history of football. He states that his trainer is a big part of his success. He may play a part in Peterson's success, but he's not the real reason for it.

The list of great football players goes on and on. All having magnificent talents in different positions. But one thing remains the same: the source of their talent. Every single one of these players has a God-given talent. He has given them their athletic abilities! Some will give credit to God, but many do not.

I won't waste time speculating if those who don't give credit to Him are Christians or not, that's not my intent and it's not for me to judge.

This week's verse focuses on humility and giving God credit for our abilities. What are your abilities? Have you thanked God for them? Have you given Him credit?

Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, (II Corinthians 3:5 NKJV)

Weekly Verse: 9/8

"Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice." (Psalms 141:2 NKJV)

This past Friday night our church had an event called Encounter. It is a night of worship and prayer. This was my 1st experience, and I have to say it was very moving! To see so many people raising their hands in praise and hearing them call out to Jesus was something I find very hard to describe!

Before one of the songs, the above verse was displayed on the screens. It has stuck with me since. There's just something about this verse. I want to repeat it over and over again. Reading it and saying it out loud brings so much joy to my heart! I hope it does the same for you! ❤
